Google has introduced a new wave of artificial intelligence features for Android, including agentic AI capabilities and customizable “vibe-coded” widgets, as part of its Android Show: I/O Edition event held ahead of Google I/O 2026. The company said the updates are designed to make Android devices more proactive, personalized, and context-aware through its Gemini Intelligence platform.
Among the most significant announcements was the expansion of Gemini’s agentic functionality. Google demonstrated how Gemini can complete multi-step actions across apps, including copying grocery items from a notes application into a shopping cart and assisting users with web browsing, appointment booking, and form completion. According to the company, users will still be required to approve sensitive actions such as purchases before checkout is finalized.
Google said these features build on earlier Gemini integrations first previewed during the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S26 earlier this year. The company described Android’s transition from a traditional mobile operating system into what it calls an “intelligence system,” powered by Gemini Intelligence.
The event also introduced “Create My Widget,” a new Android feature that allows users to generate home screen widgets using natural language prompts. Users can describe the type of information or layout they want, and Gemini automatically builds a customizable widget interface. Examples shared by Google included meal-planning dashboards and personalized weather widgets focused on cycling conditions such as wind speed and rainfall.
Google said the feature aligns with the growing trend of “vibe coding,” a term widely used to describe software creation through conversational AI prompts instead of traditional programming workflows. Industry interest in AI-assisted coding has accelerated over the past year as companies compete to simplify software development for both developers and non-technical users.
Additional Gemini-powered upgrades announced for Android include AI-assisted form filling, contextual screen awareness, and enhanced speech dictation within Gboard. Google also confirmed that Gemini in Chrome will arrive on Android devices later this year, allowing users to summarize webpages and ask questions about on-screen content directly within the browser.
The company stated that the initial rollout of these AI capabilities will begin this summer on recent Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices before expanding to additional Android hardware later in 2026.
The announcements arrive as Google intensifies competition in generative AI across consumer devices. Rivals including Apple, Microsoft, and OpenAI have also accelerated investments in AI-powered assistants and automation tools integrated into operating systems and productivity software.
Google is expected to provide further technical details and developer-focused demonstrations during the main Google I/O keynote later this month.
